日本 | Japan, Nippon, Nihon

First - Why is this in English?

Because it’s universal, translatable, and - people are looking for this information.

This is my "Japan cheat sheet", basics, "must visits", however you wanna call it - distilled from chats with people who didn't ask for this much, but I’ll keep it short and practical.

Japan, Nippon, Nihon

The land of discipline — things you MUST know/do

  • People line up for everything - so do you!
Crossing the street, getting on a train, entering a shop, even walking in busy areas. Order matters.

  • Do NOT eat while walking!
Ever. If you buy food, stop somewhere where you don’t block others, eat it, drink it, and move on.

  • The holy trinity of convenience stores: 7-Eleven, Lawson, FamilyMart, you can pay by card ("kaado-de onegaishimasu")

    • Delicious (and cheap) food

    • Onigiri ~1.5 lv

    • Egg sandwich ~2 lv

  • Vending machines are everywhere
They sell hot and cold drinks at combini prices.
Trash bins next to them are only for bottles/cans.

  • There are basically no public trash bins, so what to do?

    • Eat in front of the counter → return trash to the seller

    • Otherwise → take it back to your hotel

    • Combini stores usually have bins only for items bought there

  • Personal note
These people deserve more than us.
Yes I want to go back. Yes I would live there. But not because of shrines, tech, or scenery — but because of the people.
    They are Nihon.

  • You should have cash. If you don't - withdraw from an ATM at a sevenele~

KYOTO🏯

The most important place in Japan.

Kyoto — Day 1: Nara🦌 (Half / Full Day)

  • Take the Kintetsu EX train, not the Limited Express
Same travel time. Limited Express just costs more.
    🦌

  • Get off at Kintetsu-Nara Station

  • Visit:

If you still have half🦌 a day left and you’re done with the deers eating you instead of the 200 yen crackers:

Uji (on the way back to Kyoto)

Kyoto — Day 2: Top 3 Temples

Must-see highlights (they’re scattered, so plan wisely):

Kyoto — Day 3: Other Side of Kyoto

Kyoto during Sakura season🌸

If you want photos in a kimono: :

  1. Rent a kimono in Gion

  2. Walk to:

    • Kiyomizu-dera

    • Ninenzaka

    • Hōkan-ji

  3. Explore everything around:

    • Yasaka-jinja

    • Zenkyo-an (my favorite hidden gem)

Zenkyo-an has a webcam where you can text people to start a YouTube livestream and wave at them  🐗

Maps:

TOKYO 🗼

Tokyo — Day 1

Easily doable in one day
+ If you’re fast: continue south to Tokyo Tower (taller than the Eiffel Tower)

Tokyo — Day 2

  • Tokyo optional* (down the list)

  • Shibuya

    • Shibuya Sky
      🎟️ Tickets ~1 month ahead
Sunset slots are hard to get, but just get in earlier — no one kicks you out

    • Hachikō Statue (right at the crossing, don't panic with google maps showing you 6 levels, just stay grounded)

    • Malls. So many shopping Malls.

  • Shinjuku

Tokyo — optional(s)

  • teamLabs
Just… so damn cool. have at least 3 hours for it.

  • Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
Paid entrance, but during flowering season it’s beautiful and calmer

  • Goutokuji-temple (cat shrine)

  • Have a whole day more?
HAKONE I'm not even going to write more than that. Buy the Hakone Freepass, research, choose a road, fall in love. Probably my fullest/best day.

YouTube Tips🎥

For almost any place, you’ll find a video by Abi:
https://www.youtube.com/@piqtourjapan/videos

Search like this: "piqtour nishiki market"

Osaka & Kobe🎡

  • Osaka
A bit crazy, like a circus, place for food and entertainment. Sadly polluted by tourists and badly regulated.
Universal Studios tickets usually sell out so check ahead, check early.

  • Kobe (for beef lovers)
    Small city, but:

    • One very long street

    • Tons of Kobe beef restaurants

    • "Chinatown" street like Nishiki market, parallel to Motomachi.

From the station, walk Kobe Motomachi Street:

Kobe = top-tier wagyu
But honestly, wagyu is everywhere: Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo.

Final Words

Japan was more than a trip for me.
It felt like returning to a previous life.

I grew up with anime and Japanese culture.
I learned Japanese (and deutsch) from anime.
Enough to talk to people there—and they were genuinely happy about it.

I could talk about Japan endlessly but I’ll stop here—for now.

For anyone who's more into it, this is a stitch of all my facebook stories I posted: reel
